This wash strips the dirt and oil from the material so the dye will take evenly. Otherwise, even “new” fabric can look uneven and splotchy.
Bath #2
This ensures the dye adheres to the fibers, otherwise it will wash out - like a stain! Different fabric materials require different types of mordants.
Design time!
Gentle hammering or steaming will create an outline of the desired plant. Or, create a negative image using a resist!
Bath #3
Completely submerge to get an even color, or to create a gradient using a dip-dye method. This is the longest step, taking hours or even days.
Bath #4
A PH neutral laundry detergent is a must, from here on out. Too acidic or alkaline can strip or change the natural color. Voila!
